Olga Kirilova is the main person of the film. She is a reindeer herder at the of Tundra reindeer collective, Lovozero, Murmansk oblast, Russia.
Olga is a skilled herder and prefers to use reindeers for transports. Snowmobiles are too fragile for the cold and harsh climate.
The Sami’s or the laps, are the indigenous people northern Scandinavia. Four countries, Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland, divide Lapland. Reindeers are the most important animals here.
Only very special reindeers bull can be used to pull a sledge. To train a good pulling team takes thousands of hours.
Many Sami’s has learned to handle the lasso before they learned to walk.
A Russian poacher killed this reindeer. The big reindeer herds disappeared with the chaos that followed the perestroika.
